  • 4 medium yellow onions
  • ½ pound ground beef
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • kosher salt
  • chicken hamburger seasoning
  • garlic powder
  • black pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions by peeling and hollowing them out, leaving about 1/4 inch of onion around the sides.
  2. In a skillet, melt butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add the hollowed onion centers and cook until soft and golden brown.
  3. In another skillet, heat remaining olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook ground beef with seasonings until browned.
  4. Mix half of the caramelized onions into the beef mixture and fill each hollow onion with this mixture.
  5. Place filled onions upright in a baking dish. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake covered for 30 minutes. Uncover, add Gruyere cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly.
